Unruffled Thoughts of a Wanderer

Stay Curious

Staying Curious Is the Gateway to Success

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

-Walt Disney

For the longest time in history, religions were in the limelight of any civilization. From Christianity to Judaism and Islam, every religion explained the world in a certain nature, and everyone was supposed to follow it no questions asked. Sometimes, people had to pay with their lives for being curious. Before the industrial revolution began in Europe, practicing science was considered a capital crime. Yet, a bunch of people who were curious to understand the nature of the world, changed the whole of Europe for good.

If there is one thing common in all men and women. Ones who managed to find meaning in their lives, it would be the fact that they were always curious. Humans are not evolved to keep repeating the same mundane task over and over again. Yet the modern structure demands that from us. To wake up every morning, go to work, come back, and sleep. Only the people who managed to break this cycle by staying curious won their life.

I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.

Albert Einstein

Stay curious about your career.

As soon as we get out of the university, most of us expect a career that will take you to the top in a carefully curated step by step process. There are enough and more success stories of people who manage to get some success out of it. Yet, if the future ahead of you is so certain what is the point of living it?

If you are a part of a larger organization, don’t just be a cog in a system. Try to stay open-minded to see the bigger picture of things. If you are in the finance department, it won’t hurt you to learn how Human Resources manage their work or how IT support attends to all your tickets. If you know the struggle they go through, you might think again before complaining about IT being late to attend to your issue. Also, you might be able to help them streamline a process that can improve efficiency. Of cause that was a very high-level example, I took there. Yet I hope you got the gist of it.

Stay curious in Relationships

I know what you are thinking. And no, I am not talking about adultery. My suggestion is something that you can use with anyone. Imagine an instance where you texted one of your friends, but she did not respond back to you. What goes in your mind at that moment is heavily dependent on your perception towards them. If you know that she is a workaholic, you would probably assume that she must be stuck at work. If you are insecure about the relationship with her, all the different kinds of insecure ideas might run in your head like, is she ignoring me, does she do this on purpose?

But when you start to become more curious, you will not just judge the situation based on the preconceptions you had with them. Instead, you will become curious to know what is happening there. Maybe you will call her to see if she is okay, or maybe you drop another message. Some cease you can even check with someone close to her if she is okay. Actions like this can always improve your relationship with someone.

Being curious can take you to places which you never thought you would. I just mentioned a few which you can use in your day to day life. Being curious doesn’t stop here. From being an inventor to someone who seeks out meaning in life, the only way forward is to be curious and staying open to new ideas.
